Former Catholic school student Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg) is a lounge singer in Reno, performing in a club owned by her married gangster boyfriend Vince (Harvey Keitel). When she witnesses Vince murdering an informant, the police place her in protective custody and move her into a convent in San Francisco. Though she clashes with the Reverend Mother (Maggie Smith), her talent as a singer and choir director makes her friends among the other sisters (including Kathy Najimy) and attracts new people to the struggling church, which saves the convent and revitalizes the parish – but also draws unwanted attention to the hiding Deloris.
Sister Act is a lighthearted and joyous movie filled with beautiful songs and the undeniable screen charisma of Whoopi herself. A family favorite since its release, Sister Act found enormous success at the box office — it was the eighth-highest grossing film of 1992 — and inspired sequels as well as a very successful Broadway musical.
