Voices of Women Theatre Festival (View on Demand)

Date

Jul 17 - 23 2023

Powerstories Theatre is proud to present the third annual Voices of Women Theatre Festival, showcasing three local and three national playwrights on a virtual stage. In a society dominated by male creation, where statistics show men write 80% of produced plays, Fran Powers and Powerstories Theatre’s goal is to amplify women’s voices and showcase works written by women.

Powerstories celebrates six novice to accomplished female playwrights in the return of the Voices of Women Theatre Festival in July. The festival was first conceived to connect with its community during the continued pandemic in 2021. It was so well-received globally that it became part of the theatre’s regular season in 2022 and continued in 2023.

In the last quarter of 2022, the festival committee read through 25 plays submitted from throughout the U.S. to determine the third annual festival lineup. After a stringent evaluation process, several plays were chosen, and the committee members championed the productions they felt best met the theatre’s mission of opening hearts and minds. In the end, six diverse plays from playwrights of all ages and experience levels were selected.

Featured plays are:

Chasing Cinderella by Dana Hall (ILLINOIS)

Divine Truth by Debra A. Cole (KANSAS)

Duress by Angela M. Sarabia (FLORIDA)

Four Bedrooms by Marj O’Neill-Butler (FLORIDA)

Searching for Abuelo by Gretchen Suárez-Peña (FLORIDA)

She Tunes the Violin by Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend (ILLINOIS)

This will be the theatre’s first performance since developers pushed them out, leaving them without their home of 20 years on Kennedy Blvd. Instead of in the theatre, the performances can easily be viewed online view-on-demand at any time during July 17-23.

On the evening of July 15, Powerstories will be hosting a Kickoff Celebration of the Voices of Women Theatre Festival for theatre attendees, playwrights, cast, and crew to talk about their play. The special event will provide wine and snacks, raffles, games, and camaraderie to launch its third annual Voices of Women event.

On the evening of July 23, Powerstories will be having a closing ceremony with a playwright Q&A with all playwrights, cast, crew, and the audience. They will also present the winner of the first and second prize, as well as, the people’s choice award.
