Join Gallery221@HCC Dale Mabry Campus for the virtual closing reception of Vision, Power, Axé on Thursday, October 28, 2021 from 6:00–7:00 p.m. on Zoom. During the event Dr. Suzanne Lynch, Professor of English and Fulbright GPA Director, will moderate a conversation with Paula Santos, a Brazilian living in Salvador, Bahia, about the unique dynamics of Afro-Brazilian art and culture.
Vision, Power, Axé (open August 16 – October 28, 2021) highlights the nuance and complexity within Afro-Brazilian art from the city of Salvador, capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia and internationally acclaimed center of Afro-Brazilian culture. Contemporary artists J. Cunha, Ayrson Heráclito, Goya Lopes, Ronaldo Martins, Daiane Silva, and Domingos Terciliano Jr. explore Bahia’s rich cultural traditions and complex racial history with artworks intricately interwoven with stories of resilience, activism, and pride. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, prints, and videos, the work presented in Vision, Power, Axé at Gallery221@HCC articulates current sociopolitical issues, expressions of African heritage, the struggle for equality, and the power of self-definition.
