Reframing Haitian Art: The Symposium

The Tampa Museum of Art is organizing a major symposium focused on the artwork and artists featured in its Arthur Albrecht Collection. A recent gift to TMA, the Albrecht Collection includes over 80 paintings and sculptures by the early students and protégées to emerge from the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Divided into four sessions—two morning and two afternoon sessions—the symposium will delve into a range of topics from the history of the Centre d’Art and its inaugural class of artists, to the conservation of Haitian art, and discussions on curating modern Haitian Art.

Morning Sessions

9:00-9:10am: Welcome

9:10-9:30am: Symposium Introduction

9:30-10:45am: Session 1: The School: Centre d’art and Art Networks, Moderated by Edouard Duval Carrié, Artist and Curator

10:45-11am: Break

11am-12:15pm: Session 2: The Artists and Their Legacies, Moderated by Anthony Bogues, Harmon Family Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University

12:15 -1:45pm: Lunch Break

Afternoon Sessions

2:00-3:15pm: Session 3: The Care and Preservation: Conserving Haitian Art, Moderated by Joanna Robotham, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Tampa Museum of Art

3:15-3:30pm: Break

3:30-4:30pm: Session 4: The Exhibition: Reframing and Curating Haitian Art, In gallery tour led by Edouard Duval Carrié

4:30-5:30pm: Cocktail Reception
