Vision, Power, Axé highlights the nuance and complexity within Afro-Brazilian art from the city of Salvador, capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia and internationally acclaimed center of Afro-Brazilian culture. Contemporary artists J. Cunha, Ayrson Heráclito, Goya Lopes, Ronaldo Martins, Daiane Silva, and Domingos Terciliano Jr. explore Bahia’s rich cultural traditions and complex racial history with artworks intricately interwoven with stories of resilience, activism, and pride. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, prints, and videos, the work presented in Vision, Power, Axé at Gallery221@HCC articulates current sociopolitical issues, expressions of African heritage, the struggle for equality, and the power of self-definition.
