2h 15m / PG-13 / Documentary, Music
A cinematic odyssey exploring David Bowie’s creative and musical journey from visionary filmmaker Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck), Moonage Daydream eschews the traditional musician-bio-documentary structure of interviewing subjects who knew and loved him to explain his relevance, or voiceovers chattering about his importance to society. Instead, Morgen relies on Bowie’s music itself, flowing and poetic images and creative editing to produce a film that’s less about explaining or eulogizing Bowie than it is about tapping into his energy in an novel way. As reviewer Brian Tallerico put it: “It’s an insanely ambitious movie. It shouldn’t work. It feels like a minor miracle that it does.” Through his own voice and 48 tracks mixed from their original stems, Moonage Daydream is a unique perspective on a world-shaping creative genius, worthy of the artist himself.
