Some call the survival of La Gaceta newspaper, a miracle at a time when print journalism is considered an endangered species.
La Gaceta’s roots stem from political refugees, a strong immigrant past… cigars… romance and rumors all creating an incredible perspective into a century of Hispanic history and culture in Tampa.
This film, La Gaceta The Documentary: 100 years and 3 Generations Behind America’s Only Trilingual Newspaper, goes behind-the-scenes to chronicle the stories and personalities of our nation’s only trilingual newspaper (Spanish, Italian and English).
It’s a love story following three generations of the Manteiga family business… Tampa’s minority community and stories they’ve struggled to publish and save for one hundred years.
The Emmy Award-winning production team of Lynn Marvin Dingfelder & Larry Wiezycki from Creative on Main Street studios produced this nostalgic new documentary. They are the same team who successfully produced several award winning documentaries that have debuted at Tampa Theatre, and local film festivals, and have aired on PBS including:
- JFK in Tampa: The 50th Anniversary
- The Goody Goody: Past Present & Future
- The Fabulous Rockers Forever!
- Save Our Cottages: Artists with a Cause
- The Frank Rey Dance Studio: 60 Years of Dance in Tampa
After the screening, local author Paul Wilborn will host a panel discussion with the film’s director, Lynn Marvin Dingfelder, and editor, Larry Wiezycki, and Patrick Manteiga, the Editor & Publisher of La Gaceta newspaper.
