Here is the actual, approved blurb from the distributor of the film Everything Everywhere All At Once. “Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, the film is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to finish her taxes.”

So okay, yes, that’s all true. But with so little said, one has to read deeply between the lines to get at what makes this movie special — and there’s an argument to be made that it’s better to go in knowing nothing at all. So fair warning: if that sounds good to you already, pick a showtime and we’ll see you very soon.

But if not: you’ll be missing the most thrilling, inspiring, creative multiverse-based action-comedy in theaters right now (looking at you, Cumberbatch). It’s a high-water mark of career rejuvenation for Michelle Yeoh, formerly one of Hollywood’s most frustrating stories as she could hardly get work between Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians. It’s an anarchic, frenetic showcase for supporting players, too, like Jamie Lee Curtis and the dumbfoundingly prolific James Hong. It is a gift we’ve been given as film enjoyers in a time when those gifts are critically thin on the ground. And we’d be remiss if all we told you was that the directors have a cool name and it’s about a frustrating audit. Instead we’ll say “Being John Malkovich meets Spirited Away,” and leave it at that.
