An aging stage actor named Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), fresh off a deep personal tragedy, is to be artist-in-residence at a theater festival out of town and needs a driver. He turns to his go-to mechanic, who recommends a young woman in her twenties, Misaki (Tôko Miura), with some painful secrets in her past. Despite their initial misgivings, a very special relationship develops between the two. And despite the huge differences in their life experiences, they find they have more in common than shows at first glance.
Understated but extraordinarily rewarding, this is the second feature from director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi released this year (the other being Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy), which gleans its premise from one of Haruki Murakami’s short stories in the collection Men Without Women. Selected as Japan’s entry for the Best International Feature Film OSCAR—the first time this filmmaker’s work has received the honor—Drive My Car marks his deserved breakthrough.
