Acting on Social Justice
August 27th – 29th, 2021
Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 2 pm
Outcast Theatre Collective and Carrollwood Players Theatre present this interactive Theatre of the Oppressed event exploring questions of racial equity in the theatre community. Featuring live performances with audience participation.
Developed by Brazilian theatre professional, Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) is a suite of techniques designed to de-mechanize the body and decolonize the mind. Through TO, participants release their creativity from the confines of the “cops on their heads” to allow them to become better collaborators in addressing social problems.
Forum Theatre, in particular, is a “rehearsal for reality” in which we move from spectator to spect-actor as we discover the power we have to change the world around us. In this Forum, we will come together as a theatre community (of both artists and audiences) to explore issues of racial equity through acting.
As part of theatre’s ongoing reckoning with how best to create a theatre more reflective of who we are and who we want to be, Outcast Theatre Collective and Carrollwood Players Theatre offer this opportunity to become part of the solution.
