Join Gallery221@HCC Dale Mabry Campus for a virtual screening of the short film “5 FITAS” followed by a discussion with Brazilian filmmaker Daiane Silva, whose work is currently on display in Vision, Power, Axé, an exhibition of Afro-Brazilian art. This event will be held on Thursday, September 23 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Zoom.

5 FITAS: In Salvador, Bahia, every year there is a large and traditional party for Senhor do Bonfim where faithful, tourists and revelers make pilgrimages to the famous church to tie ribbons and make wishes. Two brothers, Pedro and Gabriel, hear from an early age their grandmother’s stories and prayers to Senhor do Bonfim and decide to sneak out on the day of the festival to try to ask the orixás for a soccer ball. There, they encounter their grandmother’s stories within current events, bringing questions about religiosity, syncretism, popular manifestation, and the importance of the family.

Vision, Power, Axé highlights the nuance and complexity within Afro-Brazilian art from the city of Salvador, capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia and internationally acclaimed center of Afro-Brazilian culture. Contemporary artists J. Cunha, Ayrson Heráclito, Goya Lopes, Ronaldo Martins, Daiane Silva, and Domingos Terciliano Jr. explore Bahia’s rich cultural traditions and complex racial history with artworks intricately interwoven with stories of resilience, activism, and pride. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, prints, and videos, the work presented in Vision, Power, Axé at Gallery221@HCC articulates current sociopolitical issues, expressions of African heritage, the struggle for equality, and the power of self-definition.
