The Tiny Museum

While confined to my home during this Covid 19 Pandemic, I was reminded of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti and what he did during the war.

At the time of the second world war, the artist Alberto Giacometti and his brother Diego fled Paris and took refuge in Geneva, Switzerland. During this stressful time confined to a small hotel room, Giacometti began making tiny coarsely textured skeletal figures and heads, so small that they appeared far away in space.   I have read that the smaller he made them, the larger they seemed to be in his mind.

We are all living with the stress of the pandemic and a few of the members of our Thursday morning sculpture group are still staying home. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of energy for huge works of art but we all want to express ourselves during this important time.  It is our creativity which keeps our spirits up and gives us hope for the future.

Inspired by Giacometti, I came up with the idea of a Tiny Museum. The Thursday morning Sculpture Group is making small sculptures (8 inches or less) and displaying them on small pedestals in a model of a museum.  The rooms of the museum exhibition will be photographed and displayed on the TRA website and facebook page. In this way, something small is becoming something big and that makes us all feel less confined, less separated from one another.
