Gallery114@HCC Ybor City Campus presents A Paradoxical Synthesis, featuring work by artists Tony Krol and Michelle Sawyer of Illsol. This exhibition will be on display August 16 – September 23, 2021. A closing reception is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2021 from 5:00–8:00 p.m.

A Paradoxical Synthesis is a visual narrative of how the artists Tony Krol and Michelle Sawyer, who work collectively as Illsol, merge contrasting thought processes and approaches into one cohesive style. While the contrasting methods are apparent in their murals, A Paradoxical Synthesis offers a more intimate exploration of the pair’s artistic dichotomy. Through the display of both small- and large-scale artworks, their exhibition in Gallery114@HCC provides a closer examination of how each individual’s influences, experiences and inspiration have shaped their collective aesthetic.

About Illsol: Tony Krol and Michelle Sawyer started painting large scale projects together in 2015 but have worked as artists individually for over ten years. The pair’s mural work spans from interior projects to multi-story buildings, and the team works with private clients, city municipalities, corporations and small businesses. Half of the team is inspired to create art from the influence of the core elements of urban textures, with a background in aerosols, stencils, and wheat pasting. The other half of the team trained in traditional works such as oil and acrylic painting and worked in a traditional tattoo apprenticeship for a time. The result of the two styles creates a dichotomy of bright textured imagery intermixed with fine lines, and traditionally rendered elements, taking influence from reference photography and urban textures. Both members of the team have an education from the University of South Florida with a focus in fine art.
