In times past, milking stools saw benches, and a host of other furniture was built on the framework of a thick slab seat holding the legs in round mortices.
Come and learn this traditional craft of greenwood furniture making with Jason Lonon, an Appalachian craftsman from North Carolina.

In this introductory class, you will get to build several forms of simple seating from the three-legged milking stool to four-legged benches and stools using many different kinds of tools – both historic and modern.  You’ll work with both green and dry wood and understand how you can harvest your own materials in the future.

We’ll cover a lot of ground while working on several different projects, and in the process, you gain a wide range of skills:

Processing green wood fresh from the forest
Making a tenon to fit a round hole
Making cylindrical and tapered mortices
Basic hand planing technique
