Award-winning author Ben Montgomery will discuss his latest book, via Zoom, A Shot in the Moonlight: How a Freed Slave and a Confederate Soldier Fought for Justice in the Jim Crow South, Thursday, February 11, 6:30 pm. Registration is required at https://events.safetyharborlibrary.org/events/ben-montgomery.
A Shot in the Moonlight is the sensational true story of George Dinning, a freed slave, who in 1899 joined forces with a Confederate war hero in search of justice in the Jim Crow south. Drawing on a wealth of never-before-published material, Montgomery resurrects this dramatic but largely forgotten story and the unusual convergence of characters that allowed this unlikely story of justice to unfold in a time and place where justice was all too rare.
Montgomery, a former enterprise reporter at the Tampa Bay Times, is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Grandma Gatewood’s Walk, The Leper Spy, and The Man Who Walked Backward. He was a 2010 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in local reporting and won the Dart Award and Casey Medal for the series titled For Their Own Good, about abuse at Florida’s oldest reform school.
