Tampa Museum of Art
120 W. Gasparilla Plaza Tampa, FL 33602

The Tampa Museum of Art opened its award-winning new building in 2010 with a commitment to provide innovative public programs with a focus on ancient, modern, and contemporary art. The Museum balances a growing collection, including one of the largest Greek and Roman antiquities collections in the southeastern United States, with a dynamic annual schedule of special exhibitions. The region’s largest institution devoted to the art of our time, the Museum has fostered a reputation for presenting contemporary photography and new media; most notably, Leo Villareal’s Sky (Tampa), a 14,000-square-foot LED installation on its south façade, has become an iconic landmark for Tampa. Since its founding in 1979, the Museum has been dedicated to providing quality education to students and adults, with more than half of its programs offered free of charge. The Museum is home to Riverwalk Cafe at TMA, a Cafe featuring favorite local flavors overlooking the Hillsborough River, and has emerged as Tampa’s premier venue for special events.

The Tampa Museum of Art is excited to offer virtual tour options for K-12 students.

Virtual tours are hosted via Zoom or Microsoft Teams unless otherwise arranged with a museum educator. Tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance and are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis as dates are available. Each tour lasts 30-45 minutes depending on the length of your scheduled class period.

Virtual tours are interactive, and students are encouraged to connect with the art on view with their studies and their own life experiences. Teachers can expect to encourage participation, assist with muting/unmuting, and calling on students who raise their hand.

Docent-led tours focus on connecting students with the Museum’s collections and special exhibitions. They inspire an understanding and appreciation of the visual arts. Students are encouraged to use critical thinking and viewing skills to connect with the art on view and discover how it relates to their studies and their own life experiences. Self-guided tours may be subject to admission fees.

Tours are led by volunteer docents, trained by Museum Education Department staff, who deliver tours based on current museum pedagogical theory. School tours are thematic and follow the Florida State Standards.
