Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus is seeking art programming proposals from artists and educators for Fledgling Takes Flight. Three selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend to activate Fledgling by designing toolkits specific to their practice and to lead a public program in Ybor City in the spring of 2023.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Last year, Hillsborough Community College (HCC) commissioned artist Tory Tepp to create Fledgling, a mobile sculpture that would serve as a traveling platform for artistic activation and education focusing on issues like sustainability, agriculture, and food sovereignty.
Blending creative placemaking with social practice, Fledgling Takes Flight (FTF) is a series of accessible public events using Fledgling (completed in April 2022) as a centerpiece for gathering, interaction, and learning. A bespoke cart-and-tricycle equipped with customizable, interchangeable containers (toolkits), Fledgling can be deployed into various neighborhoods or community centers to support performances, talks, and workshops. For example, the cart can be loaded with toolkits that hold seeds and compost as part of urban gardening demos.
As a functional sculpture, Fledgling is also uniquely poised for collaborations with dance, music, spoken word, etc. Through FTF, we aspire to create conscious and artful pop-up spaces across Hillsborough County in collaboration with and in response to the needs and interests of the communities Fledgling will visit.
