The Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education program is seeking original
artwork and poetry by Tampa Bay high school students on the theme of Genocide in the 20th and 21st Centuries.
High school students in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties are invited to submit drawings, paintings, photographs, illustrations, digital artwork, poems and lyrics representing the causes, consequences, victims and survivors of genocide.
Selected work will be featured in a public exhibition sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education program and Florida Humanities. One Grand Prize Winner will receive a $250 scholarship.
The goals of this project are to:
• Increase knowledge of the Holocaust and other genocides.
• Foster understanding of the factors that lead to genocide.
• Increase understanding of the impact and consequences of genocide on individuals, groups and societies.
• Encourage action to address the root causes of violence and conflict, such as hatred, intolerance, racism and discrimination.
